Riding Behind Steam, Volume 3
Chesapeake & Ohio #614

Volume 3 was recorded on April 25, 1981, as the Chessie Safety Express traversed the former Baltimore & Ohio line from East St. Louis to Flora, Illinois, and return, behind restored Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 “Greenbriar” #614.

#614 handled the train flawlessly, charging loudly up Caseyville hill and speeding across mile after mile of Illinois flatlands. She also performed spectacularly for the cameras, putting on photo runs in the grand style of Ross Rowland’s High Iron excursions.

#614 has not run since the mid 1990s, and has since been returned to its former status as a display engine. The memories, however, live on of those heady days on the high iron.
