Trackside Steam Recordings

Sounds Of Steam
Volume 8

Sounds of steam locomotives recorded on tourist lines and on the mainline between 2015 and 2019.

Ridin' The Blinds

Climb aboard as "we ride the blinds," or aboard the back of a steam locomotive's tender. Two extended recordings present the sounds of riding in a place that was popular (if extremely dangerous) with hobos back in the day. One presents a simulated branchline passenger train, while the second simulates a local freight going about its work.

Norfolk & Western 611: Blue Ridge Thunder

This CD was recorded during Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611's runs out of Roanoke to Lynchburg and Walton, Virginia, in 2016 and 2017. This title was originally released in 2016, and the new edition is re-edited and expanded with new material.

Railroad Days!

Sounds of steam and first generation diesels recorded during Railroad Days at the Monticello Railway Museum

The recordings on this CD were made over the course of eight years between 1993 and 2001. Pace sequences and an on train recording complement trackside sequences. This CD includes the engine with a CB&Q whistle in 1995.

Sounds Of The Black Hills Central

Recorded in 1994, this CD features 2-6-2 #7 and 2-6-2T #104 tackling the grades of the Black Hills Central. Locomotive mounted microphones, pacing sequences and tender top recordings complement the trackside sounds on the railroad's stiff grades.

The sounds on this CD were lifted from the soundtracks of video cameras on location to film 2-6-6-2T #110 working the line's grades in 2010.
