How to Choose the Size of Cornice Kit You Need.
First, measure the width of your window. Include any molding, next to the window. Or, if you have a rod above your window, (a drapery or verticals rod) measure the rod, not the window width. Take that measurement and add 4 inches to it. This total measurement will be the finished length of your Cornice and will help determine which size Kit to choose. You can choose a Kit that falls within your measurement or you can choose a Kit that is a little shorter than your measurement and add an Extender. Below you will see Kit sizes.
Example: a 16” X 48”-18” This means that this Cornice Kit will fit any window that measures between 18 and 48 inches wide.
Choosing the Height of Your Cornice.
The Cornices come in 3 different Heights. 16 inches high, 12 inches high and 7 inches high. 16 inch high Cornices work very well in rooms with high ceilings. 12 inch high Cornices are for standard ceilings in dining rooms, master bedrooms and living rooms. 7 inch highs are used for kitchens, smaller bathroom windows and children’s rooms. 16 inch high Cornices are very attractive on smaller windows. It is not the height of the Cornice, that is sometimes “too much” for the window. It is usually the fabric you choose. If you wish your Cornice to be a focal point in the room, choose a bold print. If you wish the room to flow, choose a more subtle, neutral color and pattern.
How the Kit will Custom Fit Your Window.
The Cornice frame is made of 100% wood. To custom fit the Cornice, to your window, you make 2 small cuts, at the end of the Frame, sizing the length down. The cuts are simple and the Kit does not require a straight cut. The End Returns come with a 6 inch clearance from the wall for Treatments mounted outside the window frame and can be sized down to a 3 inch clearance for Treatments mounted inside the window frame.
